G Pen built their name on a simple 510 battery back in 2012, and the 510 Original is that idea brought up to date. It is the smallest battery the brand has ever made, at just under 57mm tall, yet it carries a digital display, three voltage presets and a proper preheat cycle.

This is the first G Pen product we have stocked, and it is a sensible place to start. Six finishes, five of them translucent so you can see the cartridge sitting inside.

At 24 x 21.1 x 56.7mm this genuinely disappears into a pocket. There is no wasted material anywhere on it, and the squared-off body means it sits flat on a desk rather than rolling away. If you have found 510 batteries bulkier than the cartridge they are powering, this solves that.

Three Voltage Presets

Three clicks cycles between 3.2V, 3.6V and 3.8V. Lower settings give a cooler, more flavour-led draw and are kinder to a cartridge; higher settings produce warmer, thicker vapour. Three well-chosen steps is plenty for most people and considerably less fiddly than a hundred of them.

Ten Second Preheat

Two quick clicks runs a gentle 1.8V preheat for ten seconds. That is the fix for a thick oil or a cartridge that has been sitting somewhere cold, and it saves the harsh first pull you otherwise get while everything comes up to temperature.

Digital Display And Draw Activation

A small digital readout shows your voltage setting, battery level and charging status, so there are no flashing colour codes to memorise. You can draw straight from it without pressing anything, or hold the single button if you prefer to fire manually.

USB-C With Pass-Through Charging

The 400mAh cell charges over USB-C, and you can keep using the battery while it charges. A ten minute auto shut-off means it will not fire in a bag, and five clicks locks it off entirely.

How To Use The G Pen 510 Original

1. Screw your 510 cartridge into the top of the battery, turning clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten.
2. Click the button five times to switch the battery on.
3. Click three times to cycle between 3.2V, 3.6V and 3.8V. Start low and work up.
4. Draw from the cartridge, or hold the button while you draw. Double-click first for a ten second preheat if your oil is thick.

Cleaning And Maintenance

Wipe the 510 connection with a cotton bud and a little isopropyl alcohol whenever oil works its way into the thread, and let it dry fully before refitting a cartridge. A dirty connection is the most common reason a battery stops reading a cartridge properly, and it takes thirty seconds to put right.

The Final Word
