Venty by Storz & Bickel Review (UK): The Best Portable Vaporizer You Can Buy?

Venty Dry Herb Vaporizer Review

TL;DR: our Venty verdict

The Venty (£289.00) is the most capable portable dry herb vaporizer we sell. A 130 W hybrid heater gets it to temperature in 20 seconds, an airflow ring on the cooling unit lets you choose between a tight flavour draw and a 20-litre-a-minute cloud, and two 18650 cells give well over ten bowls per charge with an 80% top-up in 40 minutes. It loses half a mark for the things Storz & Bickel didn't change, which are the size (252 g, a jacket pocket rather than a jeans pocket), batteries you can't swap, and a cooling unit that takes ten minutes to clean properly. Rating: 4.5 out of 5. In stock at the time of writing, with a two-year warranty that becomes three when you register it.

Storz & Bickel released the Venty at the end of 2023, their first new portable since the Crafty and Mighty in 2014, and the number everyone remembers from the launch is 20 seconds, which is the heat-up time. The Mighty+ takes a minute. That figure gets the Venty into conversations with on-demand convection devices like the TinyMight 2, which is odd company for a session vaporizer with a screen and two buttons, and it's why we get asked about it more than any other device over £250. This review covers the single device in detail. If you're deciding between the three Storz & Bickel portables, our Venty vs Mighty+ vs Crafty+ comparison does that job and we won't repeat it here.

Design and build

The Venty is a Mighty with more height, more bulk and a redesigned top. The shoulders step in towards the mouthpiece, and the whole top section is the cooling unit with the orange airflow ring around its base. The body is the same medical-grade PEEK plastic Storz & Bickel use on the Mighty+ and Crafty+, finished in matte black with orange accents, and it feels like a tool rather than a gadget. There's a flat base, so it stands upright on a table without the stir tool trick the Mighty needs.

At 252 g it's the heaviest portable we stock. In a coat or jacket pocket you forget about it; in jeans you don't. The display is a simple LCD showing set and actual temperature, battery and Bluetooth status, with plus and minus buttons underneath and the power button on the side. Everything you need to run it is on the device, and the app only adds settings.

The chamber sits under the cooling unit, which twists off, and it's the same 1.4 cm³ ceramic-coated chamber as the Mighty+, so the Storz & Bickel dosing capsules, screens and filling aid carry over. The Venty parts collection has all of them.

The airflow ring, and what it actually changes

Top-down view of the Storz and Bickel Venty showing the mouthpiece and the orange airflow ring

This is the feature no other portable has, and it's the reason to buy a Venty over a Mighty+. The ring at the base of the cooling unit has three notches. Closed, the draw is restricted in the way a Mighty's is, and you get dense, concentrated vapour with the full flavour of the herb. Fully open, air moves through the chamber at up to 20 litres a minute, the draw has almost no resistance, and the vapour is cooler, bigger and milder on the throat. The middle notch is where most owners settle.

Three practical consequences. First, you can compensate for how you've packed the chamber. A tight pack that would choke a Mighty just needs the ring opened a notch. Second, you can run higher temperatures comfortably, because the extra air cools the vapour, so 205°C with the ring open feels like 190°C on a Mighty+. Third, the heater responds to your draw. There's a flow sensor inside, and the Venty increases the heating as you pull harder, which is how it keeps the chamber at temperature while you're moving 20 litres of air through it, something the fixed-airflow Mighty+ was never asked to do. Closing the ring fully while the device sits warm between draws also stops the trickle of vapour from an idle chamber, which matters more than it sounds if you're using it indoors.

Vapour quality and the 130 W heater

Storz & Bickel rate the Venty's heater at a maximum of 130 W, against a figure of around 40 W quoted for the Mighty+ by the US reviewers who've measured it, and the difference is obvious in the first 30 seconds of ownership. Press the button, the display counts up from room temperature to 180°C in about 20 seconds, the device buzzes, and the first draw is already dense. On the Mighty+ you'd still be waiting.

The vapour itself is classic Storz & Bickel, which means smooth, even and consistent from the first draw to the last, with none of the thin early draws or scorched late ones that a conduction device gives you. The hybrid heater cooks the whole chamber evenly, so a loose quarter-gram load gives ten to twelve good draws before the taste turns to popcorn, and the spent herb comes out an even brown. Flavour at 175°C to 185°C is clean and clear, and the airflow ring means you can keep it that way longer by opening the ring rather than turning the heat up. The conduction vs convection guide explains why a hybrid behaves this way.

Where it differs from a pure convection device like the TinyMight 2 is in character rather than quality. The TinyMight gives sharper flavour in the first two draws and more of a punch; the Venty gives the same vapour for twelve, and never asks you to think about your draw.

Temperature, Boost and Superboost

The range is 40°C to 210°C in 1°C steps, set with the buttons or the app. Start at 180°C. Between 175°C and 185°C you get the cleanest flavour, 185°C to 200°C is the all-round range, and 200°C to 210°C is for finishing a bowl, which is how every Storz & Bickel owner we know runs theirs. Our temperature guide goes through what each band does and the starting settings for every device we stock.

Boost and Superboost are the shortcut. A double click on the power button raises the set temperature by 15°C for about 90 seconds, so 180°C becomes 195°C, and a second double click adds another 15°C to 210°C. When the timer runs out the device drops back to your base temperature on its own. It means you can run an entire session, flavour at the start and dense vapour at the end, without touching the up button, and both the increment and the duration can be changed in the app if 15°C steps aren't what you want.

How to use the Venty

Storz and Bickel Venty with the filling aid, cleaning brush, screens, seal rings and USB-C cable from the box

  1. Grind medium. The Storz & Bickel herb mill is calibrated for it, but any decent grinder works.
  2. Twist off the cooling unit and fit the filling aid over the chamber. Fill loosely to the top, or drop in a pre-filled dosing capsule, then twist the cooling unit back on.
  3. Press the power button once to switch on. Set your temperature with the plus and minus buttons; 180°C to start.
  4. Wait about 20 seconds. The display shows the actual temperature climbing, and the Venty vibrates when it's ready.
  5. Set the airflow ring to the middle notch, flip up the mouthpiece and draw slowly for five to ten seconds. Open the ring if the draw feels tight.
  6. Double click for Boost when the vapour thins, and again for Superboost to finish the bowl.
  7. Press the power button once to switch off (a double click is Boost, so keep it to a single press), then twist off the cooling unit and empty the chamber while it's warm. The device switches itself off after a period of inactivity if you forget.

Battery and charging

Two 18650 cells sit inside the body, and they're not user-replaceable, which is the one spec where the TinyMight 2 and the XMax V4 Pro have a real advantage. In return you get a lot of runtime. Owners who've counted report ten to fourteen full bowls per charge at normal temperatures, which for one person is several days between charges.

Charging is USB-C. With a 45 W USB-C charger, which is what Storz & Bickel's own Supercharger is, the Venty reaches about 80% in 40 minutes. From a phone charger it takes several hours, and the display tells you when it's on a slow charger. The app has an ECO charging mode designed to extend the life of the cells, and given that they can't be swapped, it's worth switching on from day one.

The app, and whether you need it

You don't. Every function the Venty has, from temperature to Boost to switching it on, works from the buttons. What the Storz & Bickel Web App adds over Bluetooth is the settings behind those functions. You can change the Boost and Superboost increments and timers, set the display brightness and the vibration, turn on ECO charging, see the total hours the device has run, and install firmware updates.

On Android there's a native app. On an iPhone, Apple don't allow vaporizer apps in the App Store, so you open app.storz-bickel.com in a browser that supports Bluetooth (Bluefy is the usual choice, as Safari doesn't). It works, and you only need it once to set the device up the way you want it.

Cleaning and maintenance

The Storz and Bickel Venty cooling unit taken apart for cleaning, with the chamber, screens and mouthpiece laid out

This is the chore. The cooling unit is what makes the vapour smooth, and it does that by giving the vapour a long path to travel, which is also where the residue collects. It comes apart into its mouthpiece, cap, base, screen and seal rings, and once every week or two of daily use you soak the plastic and metal parts in isopropyl alcohol for 20 minutes, rinse, dry and reassemble. Budget ten minutes. The sign that it's due is a draw that feels tighter at the same ring setting, or a mouthpiece that won't flip cleanly.

The chamber itself just needs a brush while it's warm, and the cleaning brush, spare screens and a set of seal rings are in the box. Dosing capsules cut the chamber cleaning to nothing and reduce the cooling unit build-up too, which is why many Venty owners end up using them. The Storz & Bickel parts collection has capsules in 40-packs and the magazine that holds eight of them.

Venty vs Mighty+ vs TinyMight 2

The two devices people cross-shop the Venty against are the Mighty+ (£258.99), which is £40 cheaper and was the default premium portable for nine years before the Venty arrived, and the TinyMight 2 (from £299), which costs the same and is the enthusiast's alternative.

Against the Mighty+, the Venty is faster, bigger-hitting and more adjustable for £40 more, and the only reasons to choose the Mighty+ are pass-through charging and a dislike of apps, neither of which you're obliged to use on the Venty either. Against the TinyMight 2 it's a question of temperament. The TinyMight is quicker, punchier and lets you swap the battery, and it asks you to learn a dial and a draw. The Venty asks nothing of you at all. If you'd hand the device to a friend without a briefing, buy the Venty.

Verdict: 4.5 out of 5

The Venty is the best portable vaporizer we sell and the one we'd recommend to anyone with £300 who wants to buy once and be done. The 20-second heat-up turns a session device into something you'll actually pick up for a quick bowl, the airflow ring solves the one complaint people had about the Mighty, and the battery, the build and the warranty are what you'd expect from the company that makes the Volcano. It isn't a five because of the things that come with the design. It's heavy, the cells are sealed, the cooling unit is a ten-minute job every fortnight, and £289.00 is a lot of money for a device that's still a jacket-pocket size. None of those stopped it topping our best dry herb vaporizers UK guide, and nothing we've sold since has moved it.

Pros: 20-second heat-up, adjustable airflow up to 20 litres a minute, 130 W heater that keeps up with any draw, 1°C control with Boost and Superboost, ten-plus bowls per charge, 80% charge in 40 minutes, dosing capsule compatible, three-year warranty with registration, works fully without the app.

Cons: 252 g and jacket-pocket sized, sealed batteries, cooling unit cleaning takes time, session mode only, iPhone users need a third-party browser for the app, £289.00.

FAQs

Is the Venty worth it over the Mighty+?

If you'll use the airflow ring or you value the 20-second heat-up, yes, the £40 is well spent. If you want pass-through charging or you'd never touch the ring, the Mighty+ gives you the same vapour quality for less. Our comparison goes through it in detail.

How long does the Venty battery last?

Ten to fourteen full bowls per charge at normal temperatures, which for one person is several days. An 80% charge takes about 40 minutes with a 45 W USB-C charger.

Does the Venty need the app?

No. Temperature, Boost, Superboost and power all work from the buttons. The app is for settings such as the Boost increment, brightness, ECO charging and firmware updates, and most owners open it once.

Is the Venty better than the TinyMight 2?

It's easier, more consistent and has a far bigger battery. The TinyMight 2 is faster, hits harder and has a swappable cell, and it takes practice. Our TinyMight 2 review covers the other side of the argument.

What is the Venty warranty in the UK?

Two years as standard, extended to three when you register the device with Storz & Bickel. Register it the day it arrives; it takes two minutes on the Storz & Bickel site.
